Emma - Conspiracy Theories: Evaluation

Once given the brief of Conspiracy Theories I immediately knew that I was fairly restricted in what I could talk about as not many people will know about Conspiracy Theories enough to be able to do an interview on them. I quickly settled on the idea of 9/11 because a few theories surrounding the attacks are very well known so chances are that people will know about them and research would not be limited. I also chose 9/11 because terrorism is still very much a threat so I wanted to be able to bring in a sense of current events while using such a pinnacle moment of history. I was quickly able to gather a lot of information and research about conspiracy theories and decided that I wanted to focus on a) George Bush and b) the unjust reaction to the muslim community. I’m relieved that I managed to get everything planned fairly quickly because from then I knew exactly what footage we had to get.

The filming started off with a lot of issues with the weather meaning that I wasn’t able to get a lot of good shots or interviews as it was raining. When we went out to film again, with more accommodating weather this time, we quickly caught on that once people realised we wanted to talk about 9/11 they were no longer interested in doing an interview for our video. It seems that people weren’t willing to talk about something so controversial. We did manage to get a few people to stop and talk to us however the majority of these people are men in their 20s. This, unfortunately, means that our findings are biased and won’t reflect a huge part of society that we didn’t manage to interview.

I didn’t want the footage in the video to not make sense with what the video was actually about so I decided to leave any extra shots to a minimum and instead tried to focus on footage and photographs from the time that the attacks happened. I also wanted to put in a voiceover so that there was a clear narrative to the video and the viewers get more information. In the edit there are some issues with the audio having a lot of background noise because the mic didn’t pick up the sound properly, however you are still able to hear the interviewees answers.

Overall, I think that the production of the video went well and that everything was well planned and executed. The only thing that is a hindrance to the quality of the video is the fact that we did not get a variety of people to interview.
