Evaluation for Video Installation

For my Video Installation I used a space in my college that was quite small and intimate. The memory I used was quite personal to me so I chose this space because I did not want it to be public or on a big screen. The video was projected on a white wall which I thought made it feel more personal and homely because it was simple and there wasn’t anything there to take away from the video itself.

The installation that I titled ‘home is where the heart is’ was very effective. On the feedback sheets that I handed out everybody understood that the video was about being surrounded by memories of friends and family at home. Many people on the feedback also said that the video made them feel nostalgic and like they were at home themselves.

For the installation I wanted it to be as simple and clean editing as possible because the memory is about my home so I wanted the video to feel homely and simple. I made the shots black and white because I didn’t want the colour to overwhelm the audience and distract from the way it made them feel. The song that I used was a cover of Ease by Troye Sivan (Cat Grace sings the cover) because it reminds me of the comfort of being at home surrounded by the things you’ve always known. I used a lot of medium shots in the video because once again I wanted the video to flow and really look like the shots belonged together instead of varying them.

In terms of found footage I used a clip of a woman taking off her glasses. I used this because I wanted it to represent the idea of someone leaving their childhood behind to move out of the house they’ve always known and the beginning of making new memories. I decided to put this clip at the end because I wanted the rest of the video to look like a reflection of their childhood and everything that comes after is the start of something new.

I think a lot of it went well because on the feedback sheets I didn’t get below a 4 star rating. The feedback sheets said people liked the way that it was edited and the way it made them feel. However, people also said that they would make it longer and use more found footage so that means I didn’t use enough clips and if I were to go back and improve it I would use more clips in the video.
