Plot Development - Natalie Rayworth
In response to the assignment brief of ‘Fishing Under The Radar’ I have created and developed two plots for my graphic narrative that are relevant to the current situation because they explore politics that are being discussed right now such as whether or not to use to violence in retaliation to a threat due to current events. There is a list of things that a plot needs in order to be properly developed and carried out such as: location, atmosphere, characters, action, twists, climax and resolution. These things help for the story to have more detail and an opportunity to be more entertaining for the reader. A location helps a reader to understand where the story is set and can also help to build the mood and atmosphere. Characters are important in order to move the story along and to explain what is happening through speech and expression. Action, twist, climax and resolution are there so that there is a clear order of how the story will flow and what happens where, this is how you keep the audience interested.
Ocean Dystopia-
I wanted to develop this idea of an ocean dystopia because the dystopian genre is something that is very popular with readers and is important because it can reflect on situations that are happening in society, such as the current discussion in politics as to how to respond to the threat of terrorism. In order to stick to the theme of ‘Fishing Under The Radar’ I decided to adapt this genre and idea that I had and make it so that it was happening under the ocean with a variety of sea creatures like mermaids and turtles.
There is a shark who is the leader of the ocean and everyday this leader chooses two fish that he wants to execute in order to keep his subjects in line. The leader always chooses the fish from the lower class families so as not to disrupt the peace with the sea creatures who have more influence - mermaids, seahorses, turtles, jellyfish. The smaller fish are tired of seeing their loved ones die everyday and are living their life in fear so want to have a better life under the sea so they plan a rebellion that leaves the mermaids in charge of the sea. Everyone is happy again and they all live in fish harmony.
Oil Spill Idea-
This idea came to me because the Oil Spill is something that had a huge impact on our world and the environment, not very much was done to help clean the sea after the Oil Spill despite there being a huge worldwide discussion about it and I wanted to highlight this in my graphic novel. A lot of my favourite graphic novels are ones that have made a subliminal point about politics and events that have happened and impacted the whole world so I felt it was very important that I do the same thing in the graphic novel that I make.
Exposition:
The exposition of the Graphic Novel will be mostly set in the ocean and around the docks with a few beaches. The first panel will show beachgoer (Matty) finding something peculiar which will be hundreds of fish washed up on the beach along with other aquatic creatures such as turtles.
Conflict:
This is when we find out that there has been an oil spill. The authorities are uncertain that they even want to take any action against the oil spill or investigate what has happened, they are happy leaving the spill to further damage the sea.
Rising of Action:
This is when we first see Poseidon, God of the sea. He threatens the humans that if they do not do anything about the effect of the spill on the ocean then he will make sure that they really know the extent of the damage they have caused and then humans start to disappear.
Climax:
The atmosphere is very gloomy and everything is grey, and there are thousands of missing posters across the docks and the town. Protesters gather to ask the government to do something about the spill.
Resolution:
The authorities agree to clean up the spill if Poseidon agrees to release the humans that he has. We see people get reunited with their families and an end scene of fishes and aquatic creatures enjoying a clean sea.
